The Triumphant return of…

I wasn’t comfortable, but who is at seven days post-partum? Those giant maternity pads are no joke!  Nevertheless, there I was, driving down a country highway with my beautiful newborn daughter sleeping sweetly behind me.  It was quiet, a good time for reflection.  I dared not turn on the radio.  Mothers live by the adage, “Let sleeping babies, sleep.”

The whir of the tires lulled me into a contemplative calm, losing myself in thought and in awe of my new baby girl.  I was blissfully unaware of my surroundings until a blaring horn shattered the quiet.

I scanned the countryside, seeking to determine the source and saw nothing.  Then it came again, only louder.  My heart lurched with excitement and my eyes turned to the clouds – expecting to see Jesus’ triumphant return.  Again, the trumpets sounded and tears filled my eyes in exhilaration.  To the left something in my peripheral vision caught my eye.  Oh what a glorious…

Freight train.

I sunk into my seat, the anticipation drained out of me.  It was nothing more than a freight train.  Honestly, I felt a bit silly but I learned something.  One day, there will be a glorious return of Christ and it can happen at any moment.  We wait in eager anticipation for His return but do we live with an urgency to reach the lost?

If Christ returns tomorrow, will your neighbor join you in celebration? Your best friend? Your parents? The local barista?

Be bold, for there is a finite number of days we have left to share the Gospel and a person’s eternity may depend upon it.

Matthew 24:37-39, 42  As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.  For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark.  They didn’t know until the flood came and swept them all away.  So this is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be…  Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.
